Basbibi was born in Afghanistan and raised in Pakistan as a refugee. She has a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University with a concentration in economic and political development and international conflict resolution. She started volunteering and helping Afghan refugees in 2017.

She is on the advisory board for the Asylum Support Clinic held at Rutgers Presbyterian Church and assists clients of Welcome Home Jersey City, a community group helping new immigrants.
